"When
I finished this painting I sat back from my easel and began
to look at the painting for an extended period of time,
as is my normal routine. What began to make itself evident
to me is the shapes similarities to the hanging branches
of a bush and with the flaming red, brown and gray emanating
from the branch I began to see it's resemblance to a burning
bush. Naming it that makes the painting a bit more representational
than what I wish to paint. I felt though that "Burning
Bush" was appropriate. Since it is the first painting
of my abstract expressionist style, it represents for me
God's commission for me to paint.
Burning
Bush was the first expressionist painting which I felt could
articulate my style. The color palette is one which I adopted
many years ago and still feel strongly about. It arrived
though my attempts to capture the Colorado landscape.
These shades of red, brown, gold and blue are the colors
of Colorado.
Far
too many abstract paintings incorporate throwing and dripping
paint in a poorly impersonated Jackson Pollack style. I
determined to avoid any sort of drip painting. After a number
of failed attempts to create an interesting style I began
to dry brush my paint. This, I felt, was unique and interesting
enough to pursue.
Moving
progressively through the pages of this website will reveal
an ongoing discourse about the developmental steps of each
painting."
