"When
I started this painting I had developed a pretty good idea of
how these paintings should look and work. Much of the paintings
character is laid out when the initial washes are put down. So
once I had prepped the canvas the way I wanted I mixed my colors
for the first wash and grabbed the appropriate brush and began
brushing in my paint. However, what began happening was that the
paint went down kinda like I wanted but kinda not. And as I progressed
through the subsequent glazes I began to see the painting take
on a form that I hadn't anticipated.
Back when
I was painting in a representational style everything was tightly
controlled and you more or less knew what the final outcome would
look like. However, with a nonrepresentational style there isn't
any subject matter to direct the outcome of the painting. So I
begin to see that the paintings are going to breathe on their
own. Virtually every artist will tell you that paintings many
times seem to take off in other directions than what the artist
intends. Sometimes it comes across rather eerily as though the
painting has come from some other place.
I don't believe
that the paintings are developed by some unseen force, I believe
that even though the process of creating these paintings is fairly
simple it is in fact very complex and many unseen factors come
into play to dictate the direction of the work. Anyway, that's
my story and I'm sticking to it ....... ish."
